You may have seen the error “Sticky notes is currently not available to you. Go to the Store.” Sometimes Windows 10 also throws out an error code like 0x803F8001 in the mix. The Sticky Notes is a Universal app in Windows 10 so, there is a very simple way to fix this error.
In fact, the way to fix any Universal app in Windows 10 is to reinstall it using PowerShell. I have talked about the process before for the Calculator app. You basically have to use the
Get-AppxPackage command in PowerShell to remove the app. After that, you have the option to install it via the Windows store. More often than not, this will fix all the problems that you are having with that app.
Backup Sticky Notes Data
Before reinstalling the app, you must make a backup of all your notes. This step is crucial if you don’t want to lose all your notes. Reinstalling the app removes all the app data, so a backup will help you recover your notes. The process is as follows.
- Head over to
- Look for a folder starting with
Microsoft.MicrosoftStickyNotes_name(name is an alphanumeric value). On my PC, this folder is
Microsoft.MicrosoftStickyNotes_8wekyb3d8bbwe. Yours may or may not be similar.
- In this folder, go to
LocalCacheand copy the
plum.cachefile somewhere safe.
Uninstall Sticky Notes
Once you have made a backup of the plum.cache file, you can safely uninstall the app.
PowerShellin the start menu search. Right-click on it and run as administrator.
Get-AppxPackage -name *Sticky*and press Enter. This will list the Sticky notes app on the top. If you have any other apps with the word “sticky” in their name, they will be listed here too. You just have to look for the app with
- Note down the value in front of the
PackageFullName. On my PC, it is
Microsoft.MicrosoftStickyNotes_22.214.171.124_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe. Yours may or may not be different.
- Type the following command to remove Sticky Notes from your PC. You will need to replace the value inside the angled brackets with the PackageFullName present on your PC.
On my PC, I have to type
Reinstall Sticky Notes
Head over to the Sticky Notes page on Windows Store and click on the big blue Get the app button. This will open the Windows Store and your download will start.
Once installed, search for Sticky Notes in the start menu and run it. This time, you won’t get the error that Sticky notes is currently not available to you. Go to the Store.
Once the app is running fine, you can also try to restore the app data using the plum.cache file. For that, you can use a text editor like Notepad or Visual Studio Code. Open the plum.cache file in the text editor of your choice and you will see all your notes. There will be a few extra special characters in between your notes but you can remove them manually.
