Dying Light 2: Fix Crashing on Selecting New Game, Won’t Launch

Last Updated on February 4, 2022

Dying Light 2 is a parkour-heavy, zombie-infested action game that offers players the opportunity to explore and scavenge an open world in the aftermath of a devastating epidemic.

The sequel to 2015’s open-world survival horror game, Dying Light 2, puts players in the shoes of a character fighting for survival amid a brutal civil war. Dying Light is one of the most successful titles made by Techland; the game currently sits on 200,000 overwhelmingly positive ratings on Steam. The sequel is also not bad either; within a day the game has garnered raving reviews from all the critics.

Note: The issue was first reported on a Steam Thread. Multiple reports after that followed up on both official game forum and Reddit.

Like every AAA launch nowadays, the game suffers from a few performance and technical issues here and there. The devs at Techland had promised that there will be a huge patch on the launch day to fix this. You can use our guide to fix Dying Light 2, not launching issue until then.

Dying Light 2 Crashing on New Game Screen

The devs have acknowledged the issue and have posted a fix for the same on the official forums:

For Steam Users:

  • Launch Steam
  • Click on Library, locate Dying Light 2
  • Right click on the game > Properties
  • Under the Launch Options there is a box where you can input commands, type the following:
/nolightfx
  • Now try launching the game.

For Epic Games Users:

  • Launch Epic Games Launcher
  • Click on your profile icon, located on top-right
  • Select Settings and Scroll down
  • Locate Dying Light 2 and Check “Additional Command Line Arguments”
  • Add the following command:
/nolightfx
  • Try launching the game after doing this.

Typically, your issue should be fixed after deploying the fix given by the devs, but if that’s not the case, your problem is similar to mine. This can be attributed to a setting called “Asynchronous Compute” that you will in Advance Video Settings Menu. You can read about this setting in detail over here. Turn it off.

Other General Fixes

Update Your Device Drivers

Both Nvidia and AMD have already pushed updates that are optimized for Dying Light 2. The Nvidia update ensures the definitive gaming experience in Dying Light 2 Stay Human, which is enhanced with performance-accelerating NVIDIA DLSS, and several DirectX 12 Ultimate ray-traced effects.

Turn off conflicting background apps

Trying a clean launch can maybe fix your issue right away. Apps like MSI Afterburner, Rivatuner, Steelseries GG, Antivirus, Defender, Firewall are a few that can cause problems.

You can launch the game with an antivirus too; just make sure to whitelist the application.

The game is well optimized so far; we tried the game on multiple computers with different specs and had no troubles.

The fans seem to be enjoying the sequel so far. While writing this article, the live player count on Steam was 160,000, which certainly means that the game is doing well right now. We will get to know more once full-fledged reviews are out.

Do let us know if we helped you out in fixing this issue. If not, make sure to comment below with your specs, and we will reply. You can also contact the devs using their discord channel.
