Apex Legends Season 16: How To Fix Crashing

Last Updated on March 17, 2023

PC gamers are no strangers to the occasional crashing in PC Games, especially when a major update drops. While many gamers chalk up these crashes to simple issues with the game itself, the real source of the problem may be your computer. In today’s article, we will find out simple fixes to take care of the crashing problem in Apex Legends.

Apex Legends is no stranger to performance and crashing issues. While the title is one of the most well-optimized titles, we still start getting issues whenever a new content update drops. This can be attributed to the vast number of players and the difference in hardware that it’s impossible to optimize the game for everyone. However, Respawn always takes feedback and takes care of issues pretty quickly.

You can use our guide to fix crashing in Apex Legends Season 15.

How To Fix Crashing in Apex Legends

Note: These are traditional tweaks that work for every game whenever there are problems.

First and foremost, make sure that your computer meets the minimum system requirements for the game you’re playing. If your computer is outdated or doesn’t have a powerful enough graphics card, you will likely experience crashes.

Crashing in S15 – Add Launch Option

The crashes started at the beginning of Season 15, however, a fix was found quickly. You can add the following launch option in both Steam and Origin.

-eac_launcher_settings SettingsDX12.json

Another user on Steam Commented on what worked for them:

Im not sure that working, but anyway you should try repairing EasyAntiCheat.

*apex main directory* -> EasyAntiCheat -> EasyAntiCheat_setup

Then just press repair button.

I didnt close the game when i did that, but i really dont know is it working.

If the fixes above don’t work for you, please continue reading the article for traditional fixes.

Update Graphics Drivers

Next, make sure that your drivers are up-to-date. Outdated drivers can cause all sorts of problems, including game crashes. You can check for driver updates by visiting your device manufacturer’s website.

When you play a video game or watch a movie, the graphics card is responsible for displaying the images on your screen. If your graphics card isn’t working correctly, you may experience lag, or the images may not be shown correctly. Updating your graphic drivers can help increase your performance and fix any display issues you may be experiencing.

I have seen people reporting crashes from time to time, and it turns out they haven’t updated their Graphics drivers for a while. You can easily update your graphic drivers by heading to the official websites:

Disable Overclocking

In the game crashing fiasco, overclocking is the culprit most of the time. Some players were able to fix this issue by bringing their GPU and CPU to default frequencies. MSI Afterburner and Zotac Firestorm are two popular tools used to overclock GPUs, both of these are known for creating problems for newer titles.

While it is not clear how many players are affected by the crashes, it is a good reminder that overclocking can be dangerous if not done correctly. It’s also worth noting that even if you don’t experience any crashes while overclocking, your system may still be unstable and could crash at any time.

Install Visual C++ Redistributables

Visual C++ redistributable is a software component installed on a computer to run applications developed with Visual C++. Updating or installing this has helped solve the crashing issues in multiple games we covered earlier.

You can download Visual C++ Redistributable Runtimes All-in-One from here. Unzip the file and launch “install_all.bat” as Administrator.

Tone Down Settings

If you’re experiencing crashes while playing Apex Legends, you may need to tone down your settings. Many games have minimum system requirements to prevent crashes and other issues. Checking your system requirements before purchasing a game is always a good idea; this does not apply to Apex Legends.

Lowering your graphics settings can also improve your game’s performance. This is especially true for laptops and older PCs. By reducing the quality of your graphics, you can achieve better framerates and a smoother gaming experience.

Not all graphics settings need to be lowered to improve performance. You may get away with disabling or reducing the quality of only a few settings. Experiment with different combinations until you find the best balance between graphics quality and performance for you.

Verify Game Files on Steam

There may be times when your game files on Steam get corrupted. This can cause the game not to work properly or not work at all. To fix this, you need to verify the game files. This process will scan through the game files and fix any corrupted ones. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Open Steam and click on the Library tab.
  2. Right-click on Apex Legends and select Properties.
  3. Click on the Local Files tab and click on the Verify Integrity of Game Files… button.
  4. Steam will start verifying the game files and will fix any corrupted ones it finds.

Verify Games Files on Origin

Since the game is available on both Steam and Origin it makes sense to mention both. To verify games files on Origin:

  • Launch Origin
  • Click on “My Game Library”
  • Locate Apex Legends, click on the game
  • Now, click on the gear button located next to the play button
  • Select “Repair” as shown in the image above.

Origin will now start looking for irregularities and take care of the broken files if there are any.

Disable Overlays

This section will cover methods to disable discord, steam and origin overlays.

If you are using Discord like me, I’d recommend you change a few things. One such thing is discord overlay; it’s not something you need at all times. I use a two-monitor setup, so the overlay is useless for me. It is also known to cause FPS drops.

Disable in-game Discord Overlay

  • Open Discord
  • Go to Overlay under App Settings
  • Click on the “Enable in-game overlay”; this will turn it off.

Disable Steam Overlay

Steam overlay is a feature that allows you to view information about the game while in-game. It also allows you to access the Steam community and chat with other players. If you do not want to use the Steam overlay, you can disable it. To disable the Steam overlay:

  • Open the Steam client and click on the “Steam” menu at the top left of the window.
  • Select “Settings”.
  • In the “Settings” window, select “In-Game”.
  • Under “In-Game”, uncheck the box next to “Enable Steam Overlay while In-Game”.
  • Click on “OK” to save your changes.

Disable Origin Overlay

Origin’s overlay allows players to view their friends’ in-game progress and chat with them while they play. Some players find the overlay disruptive and would like to disable it.

This is how you can disable Origin overlay:

  • Open Origin and click “Origin” from the header menu > Click “Application Settings”
  • Click on the “Origin In-Game” tab
  • Uncheck the box next to “Enable Origin In-Game” and click on “OK”.

Change or Remove Launch Options

According to Steam’s official page, launch options can be used to change game settings, enable features, and even create a shortcut to bypass the Steam login window.

There are many Apex Legends Launch options that you can choose from. First, start by completely clearing the launch options window before launching the game. If your game stops crashing, you’ve figured out that this was the root cause. If you’d still like to use a few important launch options, read our guide on the same.

Add Apex Legends to Windows Firewall Exception

Windows Firewall is known to cause game crashing for some players. This problem often goes unnoticed by the developers of the games, as they can’t test their games on every possible operating system and configuration. Players with this issue are advised to add the game as an exception or disable the firewall during gameplay.

To add Apex Legends as an exception:

  • Open Search in Windows
  • Type “Firewall” and select “Firewall and Network protection”
  • Click on “Allow an app through firewall.”
  • A new window will open up, listing the Allowed apps and features
  • Locate “Apex Legends” and click on both Private and Public checkboxes.

Fix Drive Errors using Windows CHKDSK Utility

A CHKDSK scan, also known as a disk check, is a process that scans your computer’s hard drive for errors. The scan can take a while to complete, but it’s worth ensuring your computer is running smoothly. If you’re experiencing problems with your computer, a CHKDSK scan may be able to fix them.

To run a CHKDSK scan on Windows 10

  • Go to the Start menu and type “cmd.”
  • Right-click on the “Command Prompt” option and select “Run as Administrator.”
  • Type “chkdsk C: /r” in the command prompt window and press Enter. Without quotes, obviously.

You may be asked to enter your administrator password. The CHKDSK scan will begin automatically.

Set Easy Anti-Cheat Priority to Low

This fix comes directly from the developers of Apex Legends. To do this:

  • Launch Apex Legends
  • Minimise the game and launch the task manager by pressing “CTRL + Shift + ESC.”
  • In the processes tab, locate the Easy Anti-Cheat program.
  • Right-click and select Set priority to low.

As mentioned before, most of these are not fixes exclusive to Apex Legends. These traditional methods work most of the time whenever there are issues such as crashing in games.

These are all the ways using which you can fix crashing in Apex Legends Season 13. If you are still facing problems, it is recommended that you contact the developers or maybe find out if this is a game-specific problem.
