A few days back, Microsoft released the KB3194496 Update for Windows 10. The update brings the build number of Windows to 14393.222. For some users, everything is working fine, but over the various internet forums, a lot of other users are complaining about the update breaking their system.
It is causing freezing, abrupt restarts, and BSOD for a lot of users. Though, this is not the main problem. The main issue with the KB3194496 update is the installation failure. After being downloaded from the Windows update, the KB3194496 is showing installation failure error for a lot of users.
There are a few workarounds like cleaning the update cache or the good old, ever reliable resetting the computer. These two might work for some, but they consume a lot of time. There is one more way to fix this.
Fix Installation Failure with the KB3194496 Update in Windows 10
The reason for the update installation failure is a task scheduled for the Xbox live features of Windows 10. The main ones which are causing this failure are XblGameSaveTask and XblGameSaveTaskLogon. Removing the entries of these tasks from their folder and the registry fixes this error. Continue reading below for the steps on how to do that.
Removing the entries of these tasks from their folder and the registry fixes this error. Continue reading below for the steps on how to do that.
- Head over to
C:\Windows\System32\Tasks\Microsoft\XblGameSave
. - Delete both the XblGameSaveTask and XblGameSaveTaskLogon files in there and close the explorer window.
- Now, open the Registry editor by pressing Windows key + r and entering
regedit
on it. - In the registry editor, go to the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache\Tree\Microsoft\XblGameSave
and delete the key. For that, right-click on XblGameSave entry and select Delete. - Close everything and restart your PC.
Once your PC boots up after doing the above, head over to the Windows update and check for the updates again. This time, the KB3194496 update will not result in an installation failure.
